DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY
Habeger Science Center Renovation
Madison, South Dakota

LEED Silver Certification

This was a complete renovation of the building interior with minor work in the University’s Data Center contained in the building.

The South Dakota Legislature appropriated funding to upgrade this 1971 building in 2008 with the requirement that it meet USGBC LEED Silver. As part of this requirement RRTL designed two interactive Kiosks to show the energy the building uses.

The project updated Microbiology, Biology, Physics and Chemistry Labs, Science support spaces, Classrooms, Seminar Rooms, Toilet Rooms providing new unisex toilets to meet ADA, and relocated Faculty Offices.

New windows were installed throughout the building providing natural light and ventilation where none existed previously.

The south facade and entry was extensively reconstructed to bring light into the south corridor / lobby space. This involved a new curved steel roof truss system with translucent panels for the roof and a steel trellis system to shade the new south facing glazing.
